Meteņi - the midpoint between Christmas and Easter

It is believed that for ancient Latvians, the year began with Meteņi, which is the midpoint between Christmas and Easter. The timing of Meteņi celebrations varies - in the past, it was celebrated on February 6th, but nowadays it is celebrated seven weeks before Easter. According to Christian traditions, Meteņi Eve falls on Saturday, Meteņi on Sunday, and Ash Wednesday on Monday.
